I think we can all agree that this last year has made us realise just how much we have to revaluate the appeal of a life lived behind closed doors.

Now, imagine this: you came into this bizarre world just 3 months ago, the only form of entertainment you’ve known is the daring but satisfactory bite on Mum’s behind after the third time she tells you to stop, and, just out of reach, you can see the green, juicy grass growing taller by the day. It’s no wonder you’re brimming with pent-up energy and that Mum seems to be getting a little impatient.

That’s why we love this time of year, when the new foals’ world suddenly becomes much bigger and when Mum can get some well-deserved me time, thanks to the novelty of Summer Grass. In a time with so much focus on the comings and goings of such a remorseless disease, we welcome the contagiousness of a happy foal with open arms and smiling muzzles.

The exhausted mums will take their foals to the lush fields for the first time and, after a few convincing whinnies to assure that the other foals aren’t some weird-smelling aliens but in fact just some equally playful ankle-biters, the mums will join each other for some long anticipated catch-up and snacks.

Meanwhile, the foals soon realise how much more fun it is to play with others and “the more the merrier” quickly becomes a well-practised moto indeed. It doesn’t take long either for them to notice that bravery is more easily come by in groups.

However, after building up the courage to dare a few tastes of the sweet-scented summer grass, the foals quickly realise that, despite the wonders of this new world, nothing quite compares to Mum’s homemade cooking.

The foals quickly fall into the exciting, yet tiring routine of play, eat, sleep, repeat. And, despite their newfound independence, the end of the day always seems to somehow find the young foals nestled up to their mothers where they can warmly and snugly prepare for what tomorrow has to offer, whatever that might be.
